A Cambridge University graduate of 1992, Ben set up Mayes & Scrine EVP (Equine Veterinary Practice), a five vet, RCVS PSS tier-2 100% equine practice with purpose built clinic facilities in Horsham West Sussex, He is a true equine general practitioner with clients from all disciplines of equine sport and is equally happy with routine call outs or in-house surgery.
Ben joined the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) Council in 2006 and was the 51st president. With 2,500 members BEVA represents most UK equine vets, liaising with the rest of the profession, government, the horse industry and internationally. He has headed up the welfare portfolio, safer horse rescue panel, insurance matters and chaired BEVA’s policy committee and Board of Trustees. Ben was also a vet at the equestrian events at the London 2012 Olympics.
Ben is a trustee of the research and education charity the (BVA) Animal Welfare Foundation, a member of the Advisory Board for the new University of Surrey Veterinary School. He is a vice-president of the Federation of European Equine Veterinary Associations (FEEVA), for whom he sits on the FVE animal welfare working group in Brussels and founded the annual European pre-purchase examination symposium. Ben is a long serving member of the RCVS Riding Establishments’ committee and has chaired the cross industry working group on equine establishments, looking at licensing, inspection and registration of all equine premises in the UK.
