The Vision

A free, online equine veterinary resource for the 21st century

The Veterinary Care of the Horse was ground breaking in its time, making a complex subject easily understandable. The co-authors Liz Morrison and Sue Devereux brought together their professional experience in communications and equine veterinary practice to write the book.  It was published by J A Allen, sold 125,000 copies and many people still remember it.

This is the inspiration for this charity-led website.  All aspects of horse welfare and veterinary care will be covered and can be rapidly updated. There will be a logical lay out, easily navigated and searchable, using illustrations  photos and infographics to aid understanding. The core content of 600 web pages will explain different diseases and conditions as well as covering topics such as vetting protocol, welfare issues, modern veterinary procedures.

These ‘front pages’ will be backed by further pages with case studies, practical examples and links to further information. Authoritative articles from institutions, vet practices and organisation websites will also be featured.  There will be a section for equine welfare news, events and topical debates.

Pages will be maximum of 1000 words with consistent format and headings to ensure website design standard is maintained. Content will be written by a volunteer team of c.20 equine vets or professionals, supported by paid editors who will ensure quality and consistency of style.  The expert panel members will be named with practice contact details on their pages and be responsible for reviewing content on an annual basis.

The initial delivery plan for topics, illustrations, page links and case studies has been undertaken. Data security, speed of access and effective search engines are all areas being built in for an optimal user experience. The website design has started with this demonstration site as an example of how it will  look and what it will contain.
