Being kicked, falling over on a hard surface and being caught in fencing are the commonest emergencies to affect un-ridden horses, as well as riding and transportation accidents. It is advisable to be prepared by having important contact details and a first aid kit to hand. People in the yard should also understand how to manage an emergency situation involving horses and riders, as well as knowing about safe handling and restraint.

The contact details should include:

  • the telephone number of the veterinary surgery and name of the horse’s usual vet
  • the yard address and postcode.
  • owner’s contact details and the insurance policy number if appropriate.
  • names and telephone numbers of staff, owners and friends who can provide assistance while you wait for the vet.

All yards should have a first aid kit which is kept in a clean, dry place in the yard – and also one in the horse box / trailer when used.
The contents include:

  • A clean metal bowl eg stainless steel dog bowl
  • Clean towel
  • Roll of cotton wool / gamgee tissue.
  • Kitchen scissors to cut gamgee, also stainless steel curved scissors to trim hair.
  • Large syringe
  • Rectal thermometer
